WAPADRAND SUBSTATION GOES INFERNO.
Residents in several areas in Pretoria East were without power on Sunday after the Wapadrand substation caught fire on Saturday evening. The fire was ignited by an explosion of the underground cable in Disselboom street. Some of the areas affected are Faerie Glen, Zwavelpoort, Lombardy, Wapadrand, Valley Farm, Silver Lakes, Tierpoort, Koedoeberg, and Donkerhoek.
The estimated time of restoration was still unknown on Sunday morning. Tshwane MMC responsible for energy and electricity, water and sanitation, and regional operations and co-ordination Phillip Nel said the metro was alerted to the fire at 20:45. He said a small portion of the Wapadrand sub-station control system caught fire and the metro’s engineers were still busy with investigations into the cause.
“The communications team will provide updates on this issue throughout the day and I will personally be working with Dr Frans Manganye, the acting group head of the energy and electricity department and his team, to ensure this issue gets resolved as swiftly as possible,” Nel said. The Wapadrand substation has been isolated from the grid to enable repairs. Cleaning of the substation took place on Sunday morning after a small portion of the station was engulfed in flames. #ladi_jaja?
