Junior Mathebula also known as ‘Jr’, grew up in Mabopane, Pretoria where he turned his childhood dreams to a reality. Today, he is a positive example to the youth of Mabopane showing that dreams can be fulfilled when one sets their mind to it. “Before I became a DJ, DJ Killer And DJ Twistee were my inspiration. They were both local DJs from Mabopane and I wanted to be like them,” said Jr.
After matric, JR went to Tshwane College of Commerce and Computer science private Institution were he studied Civil engineering. After the completion of his studies, he then decided to finally follow his dreams and has been focusing on house and amapiano music ever since.
“I love being a DJ but if given a chance to work in the Civil engineering field, I would seize that opportunity. I will still perform gigs on weekends though,” said Jr. His first gig was in 2015 at the newly named Mabopane shisanyama. Although his mixing was not perfect, he stood tall and was patient and passionate enough to practice until he was perfect.
If given a chance to collaborate with famous DJs, Jr said that his choice would be local DJ Dinho (Dinho Café) and DJ Maphorisa because their music speaks for itself and they have made a difference in the world of house and amapiano music. “I would advise people to focus on their dreams and be patient. After all, we all reap what we sew. Focus and pursue your dreams so that you can reap the joys of your efforts,” said Junior.
In 2019, Junior started being a Black Night Out (BNO) resident DJ. He plans events for BNO events and gets hired for gigs. Thereafter, it is his love of being a DJ that entertains his large fan base. Currently, Junior is thinking of rebranding his name and career. He is rebranding his brand “JR&Friends”. He plans to explore his career and take part in the production field were he will be producing music. “I like to believe that the world is my oyster, so expect me in the sound production team,” said Junior.
