On Tuesday and on Wednesday the Gauteng’s “national shutdown” will begin the nationwide protest. The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu), the SA Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) and the General Industries Workers’ Union of SA (Giwusa) are behind the planning of the shutdown.
Giwusa president Mametlwe Sebei said members will meet at Burgers Park in Pretoria on Tuesday morning to deliver memorandums “from department to department”. The unions are protesting against the rising cost of living, fuel costs and load-shedding. A night vigil will be held and some workers will sleep over at the park.
The shutdown is a planned downing of tools and on Wednesday morning, at about 6am, members will be joined by other trade unions and they will march to the Union Buildings at 10am. More protests would follow Wednesday’s shutdown
