In August of 2021, the Mabopane railway was closed for business so that refurbishing could take place. Due to reopen before the before the end of November for commencement of services, this goal was never reached.

With the cancellation of railway security services during the level 5 lockdown, the station became vulnerable to vandalism and theft of infrastructure and other aspects.

“PRASA has put in place a detailed recovery plan aimed at rehabilitating and replacing stolen and vandalized infrastructure, including replacement of stolen overhead traction equipment, signaling, substations and stations”

   Fikile Mbalula: Minister of Transport

The railway line will run from Mabopane, Pretoria North, Mountain View, Hercules and Pretoria station, at a cost of R9.50 compared to a Taxi from Mabopane to Pretoria  which costs R 30.

There are different views on Twitter with some users looking forward to the new changes and improvements and others expressing some concern.
