THE SOUTH AFRICAN STATE THEATRE PRESENTS INCUBATOR PROGRAM DARK ROOM AND WHO LEFT THE FRIDGE OPEN?
The South African State Theatre’s 2023/2024 Incubator program Showcases Compelling Dramas: ’Imxinwa’ ‘Dark Room’ and ‘Who Left the Fridge Open?’
The South African State Theatre is yet again presenting the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture’s groundbreaking ’Incubator program’ – a pioneering platform for young emerging playwrights, musicians, choreographers, fine artists and innovative theatre productions, is pleased to present two thought-provoking and immersive shows. Following a successful season of the first incubator program show of 2023/2024 season – ’IMXINWA by Zusakhe Ngqame – co-written by Lindokuhle Mdlozini – a stellar masterpiece on spirituality and spiritual exile and identity with poignant and haunting music by Mongikazi Mabedumane. Imxinwa got acclaimed reviews throughly it’s season.
The remaining two productions for the incubator season are powerful drama ‘Dark Room’ and the relatable comedy ‘Who Left the Fridge Open.’ These performances highlight the diverse stories and talents within our theatre community, offering audiences an unforgettable experience.
‘Dark Room’ takes audiences on a gripping journey as it explores the heart-wrenching world of human trafficking. Written by a talented emerging playwright Philisiwe Ntintili and music by the multi award winner Zakhele Mabena, this emotionally charged musical follows the tumultuous journey of trafficked women who grabbling to escape the horrifying circumstances. Through a poignant portrayal of their struggle, ‘Dark Room’ sheds light on the resilience and strength found within survivors and emphasises the importance of shedding light on this global issue that affects countless lives. Audiences can expect to be moved by the visceral performances and powerful storytelling that make ‘Dark Room’ an unforgettable theatrical experience. Mentored by the multi award winning playwright Aubrey Sekhabi Dark room is starring –Otto Nobela, Sandisile “Nyoni Enhle” Nkuna, Princess Sechele, Gaby Georgeson, Mncedisi Hadebe and Lindokuhle Ngomane.
‘Who Left the Fridge Open’ by Botshelo Mmutle offers a different perspective, capturing the daily challenges faced by a successful businessperson attempting to navigate the demanding world of commerce while also balancing their responsibilities to their family. This lighthearted yet heartfelt comedy delves into the humorous moments and eventual revelations that come when one realises their commitments extend far beyond the boardroom. Written with wit and flair, ‘Who Left the Fridge Open’ celebrates the universal struggle of maintaining a work-life balance and reminds us of the importance of our loved ones in the midst of life’s hustle and bustle. The production is mentored by SAST senior producer Thabiso Qwabe starring – Mandla Gaduka, Idabeth Ranake, Tiroyaone Ditlhobolo and Yolanda Ngwadla.
The incubator program under the department of sports, arts and culture, curated by our newly appointed Education, Youth and Children’s Theatre (EYCT) department manager Diamond Mokoape is committed to providing a platform for young emerging playwrights, ensuring that their diverse voices are heard and celebrated. This season’s productions serve as a testament to the program’s dedication to fostering original and groundbreaking works in theatre. Audiences are invited to experience the passion, creativity, and raw talent that these emerging storytellers bring to the stage.
The performances for ‘Dark Room’ will be showing on 1-15 October 2023 at Arena Theatre while ‘Who Left the Fridge Open’ will be showcased on 25 October – 12 November 2023 in the Sibusiso Kwinana theatre.
