The 16th Annual Mzansi Fela Festival Celebrating South African Artists.

The South African State Theatre is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated annual Mzansi Fela Festival, set to take place in December 2023. This vibrant festival aims to celebrate and showcase the incredible talent of South African theatre, music, poetry, dance and comedy, featuring a lineup that promises to captivate audiences and provide an unforgettable experience.


At the heart of the festival is the renowned Mayibuye Community Outreach program, held at the Sibusiso Kwinana Theatre. This program will showcase 15 community theatre productions, providing a platform for local artists to shine and engage with their communities in a meaningful way.


The Mzansi Fela Festival 2023 kicks off on December 1st with an exhilarating show at the Opera Theatre, where audiences will be treated to the captivating sounds of the Samthing Soweto Live Band.


On December 2nd, the festival continues with the enchanting Thandiswa Mazwai taking the stage at the Opera Theatre, presented in partnership with King Tha (Pty) Ltd. This performance promises an unforgettable evening of soulful, spiritual music and powerful vocals.


Ringo will take center stage on December 8th, at the Opera Theatre with his show titled “Fall in love with Ringo.” This charismatic artist will bring his unique blend of music and stage presence to delight audiences in his forever thrilling performances that epitomises love tales.


The Tshwane Jazz Celebration, held on December 8th at the Opera Theatre, is a partnership between The South African State Theatre and Dyertribe Music. This celebration will feature acclaimed artists Ngwako Manamela, Steve Dyer, and Andile Yenana, enchanting jazz lovers with their incredible talent and bringing the best of Tshwane’s jazz scene to the forefront.


December 9th offers a double dose of excitement at The South African State Theatre. In the Opera Theatre, the theatre proudly presents the Letta Mbulu Tribute, in association with King Tha (Pty) Ltd. This star-studded tribute will showcase the talents of Maleh, Nomisupasta, Titi Luzipo, and Brenda Mntambo, as they pay homage to the iconic Letta Mbulu through moving performances and joyful celebrations.
Simultaneously, in the Malombo Theatre, B.O.Y Wonder presents “The Portal of Rap.” This collaborative production between The South African State Theatre and Ondaground Productions takes audiences on a journey of self-discovery through the art of rap, blending poetic narration and incredible lyricism for a captivating and thought-provoking experience.


On December 13th, the Tribute to Fallen Legends, presented in partnership with Ntlaks the Journey, will commemorate and celebrate the South African musical icons who played a significant role in shaping the country’s political and cultural history. Artists including Mandla Ntlatlane, Zodwa Mabena, Percy Mthunzi, Selolo Garland, and Dudizile Makhoba will honor these legends, reminding us of the power of music as a catalyst for change.
The festival concludes on December 15th with the Ladysmith Black Mambazo Legacy Tour, proudly presented in partnership with Amambazo the Musical Productions Pty Ltd. This iconic group will take the stage at the Opera Theatre, sharing their rich harmonies and unique cultural heritage with audiences.
