On August 27 the International Boxing Day annual commemoration took place as the date coincides with the first edition of the International Boxing Federation (IBA) World Championships, which were held in Havana, Cuba in 1974. International Boxing Day first took place in 2017. After that, fans, athletes and stakeholders alike were encouraged to come together to celebrate boxing every year on July 22. The new August 27 date was confirmed in July 2021.

The South African National Boxing Orgainsation (SANABO) delivered boxing to the doorsteps of the Mamelodi community. This was a SANABO way of celebrating the International Boxing Day. The celebration started with a walk joined by boxers and coaches singing / having fun and displaying boxing moves.

Mr Siyabulela Mkwalo, in his address indicated that a large number of SANABO boxers emanate from communities such as Mamelodi and it was befitting to come celebrate the International Boxing Day in such a place. SANABO hopes that this celebration inspired the youth to participate in boxing.

The SANABO President made a commitment to ensure that his organisation brings boxing closer to the people.
