In a multidisciplinary operation three robbery suspects have been arrested in the Lyttelton policing area.

Reports were received of a VW Polo that was impersonating police officers and robbing victims of their cell phones.
The suspects will stop next to thier victim and proceed to tell them that they are Police officials, and are investigating a case and they need to see the cell phone to verify information. When the unsuspecting victim gives the cell phone to the suspect, they quickly swop it with an imitation and place it in an envelope saying that it is fine and they can open the envelope once they have gone.

On Thursday morning members were deployed in the area to search for these suspects. Members of the crime prevention unit were patrolling a known hot spot area on Embankment Ave when they spotted the suspect vehicle.

They called for back up and the suspects were stopped, when the suspects and the vehicle was searched the members discovered the “tools of their trade” fake cell phones and envelopes.

The suspects will be charged with impersonating police officers, and robbery. The detective services are currently busy linking several cases to these suspects. During the preliminary investigation it was established that these suspects are repeat offenders and have previously been arrested in the Lyttelton policing area for the same crime.
