Saturday 09 March 2019 was clothed in celebration of land claims that were lodged before 31 December 1998, President Cyril Ramaphosa told the beneficiaries and attendees at the land handover ceremony held in Mamelodi West, Moretele park.The President handed over 143 hectares of land to the Mahlangu and Malobola family and 200 million was compensated to the remaining beneficiaries.
He also shared the horrors that this family suffered when their land was forcefully taken from them. “Growing up my family went through the same pain of having their land forcefully taken away from them, and on two occasions our land was forcefully taken away from us”. He assured the beneficiaries that the accelerated land program is aimed at giving back the land to the people.
“We are putting right what was done wrong in the past. We are returning the land to the families and communities whom it was taken and stolen from”, said President Ramaphosa. The controversial land issue is embedded in the rich South African history, dating back as far as 367 years ago.
