MAMELODI SUNDOWNS KICKS OFF THEIR TROPHY DEFENCE IN STYLE.

Mamelodi Sundowns came out with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at TUKS Stadium on Sunday evening. Masandawana came into the battle in good form after winning 3-0 midweek against Stellies in the DStv Premiership, while Matsatsantsa also picked up three points on the same night. Bafana Ba Style had several chances from the first half, however United’s solid defense only crumbled in the second half.

New Chilean midfielder Marcelo Allende continued his dream start with his second goal in two games in the 80th, breaking the resistance Gavin Hunt’s Matsatsantsa had gamely attempted to put up. Ethiopian striker Abubeker Nasir also added his second goal, in his third game for his new club, in the 90th.

The first half was played at a furious pace. Downs their star-studded, multi-skilled front-line revelling in the possession fed them by classy midfield duo Teboho Mokoena and Andile Jali, edged the clear-cut chances. SuperSport looked for opportunities on the break.

“Congratulations to the entire football club and to the players for winning a very difficult match. We needed to run, we needed to stay patient, we knew that there’d be a very resolute block but we did very, very well. We played without anxiety, we gave our best which is very, very good and congratulations to the technical team on a good win, a very important win.” Coach Rulani Mokwena said.

The Brazilians await their fate as they wait for the MTN8 draw to be conducted on the evening of Monday, 29 August at 20H30, live on SuperSport Channel 202.
