Metrorail in Gauteng has resumed its operations in Pretoria North following the suspension of train services on Tuesday morning. Trains were unable to run after Eskom switched off electricity to the rail network due to non-payment by passenger rail agency Prasa. Mabopane train service was the last one affected by the power outage after the Saulsville and Pienaarspoort rail networks were reinstated.
It was announced on Wednesday that all trains that were suspended are now back pn track. Gauteng Eskom spokesperson Amanda Qithi confirmed that Prasa had failed to pay Eskom R9.6 million for services rendered.
“Their August bill that was due was not paid as requested. We later issued them a grace period for payment on 23 September, but they did not pay, and we disconnected the North Gauteng Metrorail account. However, they are committed to make payment today (Tuesday).”
Affected areas included Mabopane, Saulsville, and the Pienaarspoort to Pretoria service. The disruption left thousands of commuters stranded on Tuesday morning.
