The City of Tshwane has announced plans to shutdown the Mabopane and Ga-Rankuwa cemeteries by early 2024. The reason of closing this cemeteries is because they have neared their full lifespan and are expected to be full capacity by the end of the first quarter.
According to the City of Tshwane the decision was made after they visited region one and came to the realization that the two cemeteries were almost full. According to their estimation the burial space in Mabopane should be full by February and should number be higher than expected then they will close by January.
Meanwhile in Ga-Rankuwa the burial space is expected to be filled by March and should the numbers be more it will also close earlier. Post the closure the cemeteries will allow reburial and erecting of tombstones through bookings.
Post closing burials will be moved to Klip-Kruisfontein Cemetry which is in Ruth First road near the Soshanguve Crossing off ramp.
