Cable theft is a big issue in Tshwane, resulting in major power outages that cost the city millions of Rands. Law enforcement officials noticed a truck hauling scrap metals during normal patrols.The truck was examined, and bags containing suspected stolen copper cables were located beneath the scrap metals. The suspects admitted to being from another scrapyard after further questioning.
The Tshwane Metro Police have detained three suspects after discovering copper cable worth approximately R1 million on the street. “During the operation, one person was arrested in Akasia in the north of Pretoria after being found in possession of suspected stolen copper cables.” According to the City of Tshwane
They are also launching an extensive public awareness campto tackle the impact of cable theft and infrastructure damage, which will include law enforcement agencies, the media, businesses, communities, and other important stakeholders.According to an anonymous source, those engaged have gotten more sophisticated, aggressive, and hazardous, to the point where they steal wires using official city vehicles.
