On Monday Police minister Bheki Cele visited the Olievenhoutbosch community to listen to grievances by residents over a spike in crime in the township. The community members have raised concerns regarding the unattended cases of rape, gangsterism and police mismanagement. Cele has vowed to tackle crime and policing concerns raised by Olievenhoutbosch residents.
Police ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba said the Minister is concerned about the allegations levelled against the police officers in the area. “The community members are alleging that not only are the police not servicing them, but it looks like some of the police officers are in cahoots with the criminals there,” says Themba.
Themba added that the community is calling for a complete overhaul for the police station. However, she adds that the police ministry will look into the matter.
“It is not simple to just remove police officers from one station to another. There are processes that need to be undertaken” She says the matters raised by community members are taken seriously and would not want them to take matters into their own hands.Themba says a task team to deal with the challenges has been put up.
