According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) media statement, two suspects were arrested at Pretoria Centurion mall on the afternoon of 16 November 2021, following the conspiracy to commit armed robbery. On the statement released Police Spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello, stated that the arrest came after a multi-disciplinary team comprising of members from crime intelligence, highway patrol and Tracker received a tip-off regarding the information about a planned robbery that was to take place at Centurion Mall.
The statement further stated that members were posted strategically in and around the mall for observation. “Two vehicles that were reportedly going to be used were spotted driving into the mall,” SAPS statement read. “The suspected realised that the police were in the vicinity and they started fleeing the scene. two of them were however arrested.”
The statement explained that a firearm and ammunition as well as a signal jammer and groves were seized. “The suspects in the other vehicle managed to evade arrest,” the statement read. The statement further explains that the two apprehended are expected to appear before court very soon. Gauteng police provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, commended the members for their prompt reaction that resulted in foiling of an armed robbery.
“When we launched our safer festive season operations, I declared that we are not going to share the same space with criminals, we have more boots on the ground, complemented by police reservist and members from support environment to ensure that criminals have no space to operate,” said Mawela.
