South African boxer Moruti Mthalane won the vacant IBO flyweight title in Durban on Saturday. Baby face as he is known to his supporters defeated a Filipino boxer Jether Oliver on a split decision. Two judges gave it to Moruti and one judge gave it to Jether resulting in a split decision. Moruti was stripped off his IBF title in January after pulling out of his mandatory challenge fight.
He is arguably the best boxer in the world in his division at the moment. He held the IBF belt for five years.
The Proteas T20 world cup team has jetted off to Bangladesh to compete in the ICC world T20 cup. The Faf Du Plesis led side will be looking to win their maiden T20 title. The is always a concern with the Proteas whenever they go to a world cup. That concern is lacking the ability to go all the way, and go on to lift the title.
I hope they will be able to shake off the chokers tag line and cross the finish line this time round. South Africa will be in the same group with Sri Lanka, England and a qualifier from pool B of the qualifiers. The Proteas first game is against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
The biggest game in the South African calendar the Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs took place on Saturday. Kaizer Chiefs walked away with three points after winning the game 1-0. My concern with derbies of late is the lack of goals; I would like to see a 3-3, 4-3 or 4-4 score line. I just feel people deserve to see more goals in this fixture.
SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs will continue their journey in CAF club competitions this weekend. They both play their first leg away which is a slight advantage. Kaizer Chiefs will travel to As Vita of Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday in the second round of Champions league. As Vita will be stern looking to disappoint Kaizer Chiefs who have been looking good in this competition so far.
Going away to play in the DRC won’t be easy but it is possible Orlando Pirates proved it last season when they visited DRC to play against TP Mazembe.
SuperSport on the other hand will visit a Tunisia side ES Sahel in the second round of the confederation cup. This is a team with rich history in African football; SuperSport will have to be at their best to come back with favourable result from Tunisia.
Good luck to both teams and good luck to the Proteas that’s another conclusion of the sports column for further analysis and updates follow @lesibad.
